Have you ever eaten savory waffles? I am all about waffles, and so are my kids. We have had lots of sweet waffles because…well, just because…Did you know you can make delicious things with a basic waffle iron? I had no idea how much fun you could have!! This easy sweet potato hash brown recipe is going to be hard to resist!
I haven’t tried making anything savory in my waffle iron because I wasn’t sure how these would go over. You know how kids can be! I decided to keep it safe and use sweet potatoes. Not only is this sweet potato waffle recipe easy to make, but it is full of flavor. You can use them as a breakfast or make them mini, and they make a great appetizer! I love you can use the waffle iron for quick and easy cooking.

This easy hash brown waffle recipe is gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free, and egg-free. It is dairy-free if you garnish it with dairy-free sour cream. It is also vegan!
Ingredient Notes:

- Sweet Potatoes – You can use any sweet potato or yam. You can even use Hawaiian purple sweet potatoes!
- Olive Oil – Or another light oil.
- Seasonings: Curry, Turmeric, Salt, and Pepper – You can go lightly or heavily depending on how much you use. Kids tend to like less turmeric.
Waffle Iron Directions:
I used an Oster Belgian Waffle Maker to make this recipe. I bought it in 2015, and it is still going strong! I definitely can recommend this inexpensive waffle maker. I also use it to make these fluffy Mochi Waffles!
Step 1: Grate your sweet potatoes. I use a food processor to grate my sweet potatoes. You can also use this mandolin slicer. This will help your sweet potato waffles hold together better.
It is also easy to shred a sweet potato with a cheese grater! Just wash your potato, chop off the pointy end, and rub the sweet potato across the grater’s surface! For this recipe, you will grate 2 large sweet potatoes.
Step 2: Make sure to dry the shredded sweet potatoes with a paper towel to absorb some of the moisture. Add in the spices and mix well. This step is essential because the moisture can make your sweet potato waffles soggy.
Step 3: Spray olive oil onto the waffle iron to get a crispy finish to these waffles. You can use coconut oil or olive oil. Add the mixture to the hot waffle iron and close the lid to cook. The hash browns cook so quickly! So easy!
Stovetop Directions:
You can also fry the sweet potato hash in an oiled pan!! If you don’t have a waffle maker, no worries! If you don’t have a waffle iron, you can make more of a Latje-style pancake with this shredded sweet potato mixture. The delicious flavor would be the same, even the crispy edges!
Heat the cooking oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Drop some of the sweet potato mixture in the hot oil. Fry on each side for 3-5 minutes until the sweet potato is softened. The cooking time will vary depending on how thick and large your pancake is.

Curried Sweet Potato Waffles
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet potatoes grated
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon curry
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- salt/pepper to taste
- Optional: sour cream and chives

Instructions
- Preheat a waffle iron.
- Pat grated sweet potatoes down with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- In a large bowl, combine sweet potato, oil, and spices.
- Mix well.
- Spray olive oil onto both sides of the waffle iron.
- Add 1/4 cup of sweet potato mixture to the hot waffle iron.
- Close the lid and cook for 5-8 minutes.
- Lift the lid at 5 minutes to see if it is crispy yet.
- Cook longer if it isn’t.
- Repeat with the rest of the mixture.
- Be careful when you lift it out of the waffle iron so it doesn’t fall apart.
- Serve warm.
Notes

- These waffles will keep up to 4 days in an air-tight container, or up to 4 months in the freezer.
SPECIAL NOTE
Please know that every gluten free flour blend has a different starch to grain ratio. If you use a blend I didn’t test, you may need to adjust your moisture levels in your baked goods.

Tried the recipe. Loved the flavor, but couldn’t get the potatoes to stick together in a pancake/waffle-like fashion. Any suggestions?
Hi Chris, Thank you for your note. I was trying to keep these really low carb. I made sure my waffle iron was really, really hot and I oiled it with coconut oil. Mine held together, but I was really careful removing them from the waffle iron. They would hold up better with some egg and a little flour. I hope this helps.
